THE QUESTION :

We have a new baby at home, we moved last month, and I think all the changes are taking a toll on my older child. She has been toilet-trained since before she was 2-years-old, but lately she's been having lots of accidents. She doesn't go to the bathroom when she needs to, constantly waiting until it's too late. Our doctor recommended using pull-ups but my daughter was really sad about it, so I decided to stop. What can I do to help her?

THE ANSWER:

A new baby and a new house -- wow. Your daughter's life was recently turned upside-down. It's not surprising that she's having accidents. That's a normal reaction at this age.

If she doesn't want to wear pull-ups and she's been successfully potty trained before, I wouldn't go backwards. Simply buy a stack of underwear, get back to a regular routine of reminding her to go every hour or two, and reward her for success (perhaps with a sticker or an M&M).

You may need to set aside an entire week or long weekend during which Mommy's or Daddy's sole job (you can take turns) is to follow her around and make sure she has success with the potty. If an accident occurs, don't make a big deal of it. Just engage her help in clean up.

Once your daughter is given attention and guidance, it shouldn't take long to get her back on track.
