THE QUESTION :

My son will be entering middle school this fall. I want to find some books or other resources to help with the transition. He's a smart kid, but a little more sensitive and naive than most boys. He has experienced some bullying this year, and has lost some friends, so I'd like him to make a fresh start in middle school. I've found several books for girls, but nothing to help boys with this.

THE ANSWER:

Starting middle school can be an exciting time filled with many challenges, including changing classrooms, meeting new teachers and making new friends. To help ease the transition for your son, take a tour of the school ahead of time and walk to each of his classes if you know where they are.

Consider throwing a back-to-school party with neighborhood classmates so he can get to know them. When school begins, encourage him to join a club or team so he can meet students with similar interests. Once he's familiar with the campus and has some friends in his grade, he will be off to a good start for an enjoyable new school year.

While I'm not familiar with any books written specifically for middle-school boys to read themselves, I have found the following resources from the American Academy of Pediatrics to be useful for parents:

after raising 5 children and now being a grandmother, one bit of advice I learned is to be positive for you kids. what the live is what they learn. If you have concerns about the school... check them out yourself before sending negative thoughts to your child. It's ok for him to feel nervous or even scared. we all get that feeling from time to time when we start something new.
