THE QUESTION :

I'm nursing my 3-month-old son and want to switch to a bottle soon so I can go back to work. I don't want to pump, so I've decided to feed him formula once my milk runs out. What can I expect during this transition, and what can I do to make it easier on both of us?

THE ANSWER:

If you haven't yet given him a bottle, I would recommend introducing a bottle of breast milk or formula as soon as possible so he can get used to drinking from a bottle.

If you wait too long, he might not take to bottle-feeding. If he won't take the bottle from you, have Daddy or another caregiver feed him. You can still continue to nurse as long as you'd like, but just give him a bottle once a day so that when you go back to work, he will easily take it from whoever will be caring for him. If you're not going back to work until he is 6 to 8-months-old, he might, like some infants, go straight from breast to sippy cup and bypass the bottle altogether.

If you've already been offering him a bottle once in a while and he takes it fine, then the only decision for you to make is which formula to give him when you wean. The good news is that most infants do fine on the first formula they are given. Most major brand formulas on the market contain iron, DHA and ARA, which are all important for your little one's growth and development. Talk to your pediatrician if you have any questions about choosing a formula, or if your infant develops a rash, diarrhea, begins vomiting or encounters any other issues after you start the formula.
