We sat through our first very-over-the-top skating recital for Lily this past Sunday. By over-the-top I mean 4 year old girls in full make up with their hair professionally quaffed in skimpy little outfits. Some of the parents even hired professional photographers to capture that special moment on the ice for posterity. What are these people going to do for these kids' weddings??
Anyway, I was so proud of Lily. At five, she's the youngest in her class but had all the moves down just like the older girls. However, when it came to show time she froze and just stood there picking her nose...literally. For 90 seconds of the routine, basically the whole thing, that's all she did. Oh well. She's 5 for goodness sake.
However, one of the other mother's didn't seem to share my opinion. She said and I quote, "I don't appreciate how Lily stole the show for the rest of the girls." The audience was laughing so hard they didn't seem to notice all the brilliant moves the older (8 & 9 year old) girls were demonstrating. "They were distracted by Lily and therefore all the hard work the girls put in was for nothing!"
I apologized (to get rid of her, I actually didn't think she warranted a response but it's Brooklyn - who knows?? she could be packing heat) and explained that I didn't think all their hard work was for nothing, it was for themselves. Isn't that worth all the time and effort alone? If they have olympic dreams Lily's nose picking surely won't crush them. I wound up telling the woman to, "Step off and take a pill for cryin' out loud!".....I don't live 1 mile from the hood for nothing.
This story about your daughter is just too cute, and I think everybody can relate to it, reminds me of ballet recitals from my childhood, every year, something similar would happen to one or two or the smallest, some even bumping into the curtain, because they could not find the stage exit! But back then, everybody just thought it was hilarious. Fortunately, there weren't these kind of overambitious parents. What was this mom thinking, like you had rehearsed the nose picking with your daughter so she would get more attention? That's rediculous! And I feel sorry for her children, having to put up with such a mom, I bet she put way too much pressure on these girls to succeed, and doesn't quite care whethe they actually have fun at what they're doing.
Oh, and by the way, if you have a second to spare, please visit my new blog http://sunnykidstyle.wordpress.com/ about stylish design for kids and feel free to give me some feedback. I'd really appreciate it :):)
