When you think of salmonella contamination, you probably think of undercooked chicken, dirty cutting boards or raw eggs, right? Turns out that salmonella can lurk in some pretty unexpected places--including a jar of peanut butter.
You've probably heard about the nationwide recall of some peanut butters and peanut butter-filled snacks due to salmonella contamination. (It started in a single peanut processing plant in Georgia, but affects many different kinds of products that were sold nationwide.) So how are you supposed to know if the stuff you just bought is safe?
The Food and Drug Administration, it turns out, is a few steps ahead of you. They've created a really useful
Web site where you can learn all about the contamination and subsequent recalls. They even have a
search engine that allows you to drop in the name of your favorite peanut butter or peanutty snack (or its UPC code, if you're really going for precision) to see if it's been recalled. How helpful is that?
So before you toss every peanut-containing item in your cabinet (And who wants to throw away food in these tough economic times?) pay the FDA site a visit. You won't need to spend hours scrounging for information on a bunch of different products, and you'll get the most up-to-date list of recalls and advisories.

i dunno!!!!!
I like peanut butter very much. Is is safe to consume Skippy peanut butter. Does it have salmonella in it too.
I went to the Skippy website and they have a disclaimer on it stating that they are not effected and they don't get their peanuts from the place where all the recalls are from.
The only problem with this method, is that there are many new peanut recall products being announced everyday. Once you have checked on the products in your house, you can sign up with the FDA to receive e-mails alerting you to any new recalled items.
Prior to the peanut recall, I would receive maybe 2 e-mails a day about products. Over the past few weeks I have received as many as a few dozen e-mails a day. Just yesterday I received 9 new recall alerts. It is a lot of e-mail in my box, but I feel much safer being up to date on the latest news.
PS- The e-mails even allowed me to alert my local store when I found a recalled product on their shelf. Never would have known (as it was not a product I had) if I hadn't subscribed to the e-mails. So, not only am I keeping my family safer, but I am able to help keep my community safer too.
I have three peanut products and I would like to know if it is safe to consume.
