Did you hear about this? Apparently the new way to be cool among the 12- to 18-year-old set is to smoke Smarties. Like, the candy.
And when I say smoke, I really mean "smoke," seeing as there's no actual fire or smoke or matches involved. A recent story in The Wall Street Journal outlined the quasi-disturbing process:
1. Kids smash up a pack of Smarties still in the plastic wrapper. 2. They inhale the powder through the mouth. 3. They blow the resulting smoke out of their mouths, mimicking a smoker's exhale.
Yikes? Some truly brilliant kids--just to traumatize every adult in their lives as much as possible--have even tried snorting the dust.
So, in addition to giving kids a head start on the not-so-subtle mannerisms of addiction, what are the dangers of this behavior?
The dust usually doesn't get into kids' lungs, but can irritate throats and noses. The WSJ article also warns of a rare condition in which maggots feed on sugar particles that become lodged in nasal cavities. Horrible sounding? Yes. A great way to scare your children into never trying this? Probably.
If you're having trouble visualizing this, you might want to check out YouTube. Kids have posted dozens of videos explaining how to "smoke" Smarties candy. Here's an example, although consider yourself warned. This kid's level of Smarties-smoking expertise is enough to make any grown-up squeamish:
Adults of a certain age will also recall the candy cigarettes of their youths. A 2007 study published in the journal Preventive Medicine determined that kids who ate candy cigarettes were indeed more likely to light up as adults.
But candy cigarettes were intended to look like... well... cigarettes. Their dangerous implications were pretty clear. But Smarties? And let's not forget the dozens of otherwise innocuous candies, from Pixy Stix to candy hearts, that could be used in the same way. In short, regulating the substance--or raising awareness of it--won't exactly work with this one.
What would you do if you knew your kids were doing this?
That just saddens me. It may not physically hurt them, but the reason why they're doing it, that appearing like you're smoking... that's just sad. What is the world coming to?
While this is a sad look into today's look, it doesn't surprise me. Smoking and snorting smarties has been going on for quite some time. When I was in middle school (about 9 years ago) a lot of kids I knew were doing this. It grossed me out then too so I never did it but it was going on. We just didn't have youtube to post a how to on otherwise I'm sure it would have been up there. The kids I know who did this also used pixie sitx. Just an FYI watch your kids with pixie stix too.
When I was in High School the kids snorted Pixie Stix. That was the thing to do. Everybody who did it wanted that sugar to get in their bloodstreams quickly. Parents shouldn't be too alarmed by the kids doing this. This is probably a fad. When their little noses and throats start burning, they'll learn their lesson.
I am a young mother, but I think sometimes we read too much into things. Children ARE acting like they are smoking but not doing it to "be a cool smoking person". I don't think this situation is sooooooooo sad. Better then them smoking an actual cigarrette. Just another silly thing kids came up with to pass time. Doesn't mean they are on the corner joining a gang while "smoking smarties". Sometimes I think parents should sit back and think what was going through their mind at that age when they did silly things. Parents tend to add a more mature and perverted twist on what kid's do. At the age, you don't think too much into it, cuz if you did, you wouldn't be doing it!!!!!
When I was in middle school they used to have cigarette bubblegum that we would all get and pretend to smoke. It was a pack of bubblegum designed to look like a pack of cigarettes and the stick inside would be wrapped with white paper, down to the tannish color of the filter. Bottom line is, kids are curious. I'm sure it's been going on much before I was in middle school and I'm sure it will continue. It's just part of growing up.
My 11y/o son started doing this a while back, honestly I didn't give it a second thought, he chokes if he inhales too much dust, i just tell him he's a nutcase and go on with my day, there are so many more things out there to be worried about.
Kids have always had candy cigarettes in some shape or form, I remember having chocolate ones that came in a carton made to look exactly like a cigarette carton, the candy was brown chocolate wrapped in white edible paper, I loved them and they never encouraged me to smoke, I'm now 42 and have never smoked a cigarette in my life.
Just all a part of growing up.

I'm not overly concerned about this one. I remember having the candy cigarettes when I was a kid, and pretending to smoke. I also remember pretending to smoke when it was really cold outside and you could see your breath. :) I guess what I feel is that I talk to my kids about the dangers of smoking, or doing drugs...etc. They are both aware of what all that really means. Right now, they are just kids growing up, having fun and using their imaginations.
I agree, it's really no big deal. Kids will always imitate adults in some way. Just be sure to give them plenty of positive examples too. My son is way to young to do this(he's 3), but he does play fight, and we just talk about how it's OK to play fight but really hurting people on purpose is wrong. If a typical middle-schooler can't differentiate between play smoking/imitating a smoker and the real dangers of smoking... then that's just bad parenting.
Folks think it's all too funny. But children only emulate what they see around them. It's candy today and marijuana tomorrow. Was sad to see in 1001 Dalmations a childrens movie where Cruella De Vil smoked. The world is not worried about our children when they make the movies, write the songs, make the games. They're only concern is about the almighty dollar that fills their bank accounts and at who's expense "our children". So think twice before you find amusement in this.
Oh yah!!!! I remember when I was a child. I used to buy these dust filled ciggy bubble gum. lol It was in then but was taken off the self because of smokers addictions. The bubble gum dust didn't cause any health problems. Eg. Smoking habits. I don't smoke as the real smoke didn't appeal to me. Psychologically for children to have the desire to mimic drug addicts it is an experimental stage that only a phychiatrist will know how to help them deal with the craving to explore the drug scene.
As a mom of two young boys, I am kinda disturbed, but then I think about the dumb things I did, or my friends did, and then it doesn't seem so bad. We used to empty tea bags onto pieces of paper and "roll" cigarettes that way and smoke them for real. With fire and everything. It was pretty gross tasting and we didn't do that for long. Kids are going to try things. I think it's just up to the parents to give them the common sense not to take it too far.
That's just bizarre! Are kids really that bored?-----
i guess soo, i mean, i know a lot of kids who complain about their boredom, but boredom is kind their fault, ya know, that what my mother always told me, was when i was bored, that she told me to go out and find something to do make my own plans, and i did.
so i really dont feel sorry for them, i mean they did it to themselves.
When I was a kid, there were still bubble-gum cigarettes, which I used to save up pocket money to buy. At the time, neither of my parents smoked and I never knew anyone who smoked when I was little. Still, they made me feel grown up.
When I was in high school, my friend used to crush up Smarties and snort them in class to freak out his teachers. In reality, he was doing it as a comment on the fact that other students were walking around drugged out of their minds under the teachers noses, and they couldn't do anything about it. He was anti-drug, and thought druggies were stupid. Quite the opposite of the assumption, I suppose.
For a while in my early twenties I smoked occasionally, but mostly as an ill-guided rebellion and because I was involved in Theatre, where nearly everyone smoked. I grew out of it when I got sick of smelling like an ashtray and getting headaches whenever I woke up.
Kids will do weird things. Teenagers do weird things. And adults do weird things. The important thing is to have an open relationship with your kids so that they know that they can talk to you about anything. Also, teach them to think for themselves and not buy into whatever they see in movies or what their friends are doing.
If you want to try it, then you are as ignorant as these children. This is totally unacceptable and just plain stupid. Maybe theses children's parents should take them to a rehab or make them watch "Intervention" so they can witness the devistation firsthand that addiction brings with it. And it isn't as simple as comparing this to smoking cigarettes. This appears to be more like doing dope, from what I see on UTube. Our country is falling apart and companies like UTube should not allow posting of videos such as this. Would they let someone post a video of a person smoking meth or shooting up? I think not, and if we are going to let our countries children view things like this, then it is only a matter of time before they are smoking meth or shooting up. Get real people and face reality.
I would be concerned if i caught my son doing this and i think parents should be. The thing that gets me is when they tire of doing this what will they try next, well the real thing ofcourse, and we all know that leads a road to destruction and sometimes death. So think again parents when your child does this in front of you, maybe you should be looking at the real picture.
I would think it was funny! As long as it's not real cigarettes, it's pretty amusing. Actually, it makes me kind of want to try it.

There are far too many real dangers out there facing my kids that I'm not concerned about this at all.

Thanks for posting this, it was new to me. I'm having conflicting thoughts on this. I just blogged it linking back to your post Have a great day.
the more you moms make a big deal out of this, the more they'll do it. it's candy. be happy they're not out smoking crack!

Seriously? How DUMB!! Kids these days do the STUPIDEST things!!! I blame the parents, MTV, BET and the schools for kids lack of intelligence.
