Ending Breast Feeding.....The Guilt Of It All - Momtourage: Blogger Knows Best
Momtourage > Blogger Knows Best > Ending Breast Feeding.....The Guilt Of It All
Sherry Davey

My gal pal has breast fed her new baby girl for the first 6 months of her life and now she is switching to formula (and still pumping) because she's going back to work...unless you know of a great wet nurse.  That could be the new recession proof career!  She feels so guilty about not being able to nurse for at least 18 months as she did her first two however, I say she's lucky to have had this time with her.  With the current male-cession (it's mostly men out of work), women are putting in longer and longer days.  It feels like years since any of my friends have been able to breast feed longer than 6 weeks.  Nevertheless, the baby is experiencing nipple confusion so mom is feeling even guiltier about her decision.  I keep reminding her, you do what you can when you can.  Just think, if she stays home from work and loses her job then she and the baby can spend endless hours starig into each others eyes.....in the park....in their tent....'cause they'll be homeless.  Do what you can when you can ladies and when you can't, there's always Dr.Browns.  Anybody have any other bottles to recommend for nipple confusion??.....my husband still suffers from it.  (ha ha)

I nursed all 5 of mine who are all grown now. There will be many times when trying something new makes for some confusion but that is natural. Remember, keep a positive attitude and eventually your sweet baby will learn to accept the new.
Have you tried offering your breast milk in the bottle...it might not be the nipple but the taste of the new milk. Also by 6 months your baby can be eating solid foods too and may not need as much bottled milk.
Always be sure to discuss with your pediatrician any changes or problems. Your babies doctor needs to be kept informed of what the baby is eating. Also when introducing new foods, you should introduce 1 new food per week to see if the baby might be allergic to the food.
If you only nurse your baby for the first month, give yourself a pat on the back. It is not the easiest task to learn but oh so good for baby and mom. Be proud of yourself for your accomplishment. Know you gave your baby the best you could. That is wonderful.
Now if you need to work, as so many moms do... know you are doing something else so very vital to the life of your child. If you don't work, where will the food come from and clothing, shelter and all your baby needs. Tell your child, always... I love you and always will. that is what your baby needs most from you to feel the love and security. Keep a routine with your child as much as possible. Give your child a picture of you to look at during the day.
there will be times you get that "mom guilt" . all too often we women get that... go cry in your room... then put on some good music and dance or go read to your child or something that makes you feel good...you are wonderful for all you do for your baby and should be Proud of yourself. Now you and baby start a new chapter and make it the best you can for both of you.o
Your baby wants to be happy to and a happy mom helps!
enjoy any and all the times you have with your child even if all you are doing is building with blocks or watching a child appropriate show. cuddle up together or run around together. love and be loved.
good luck... have fun...be proud!
