Swim Break Through - Momtourage: Blogger Knows Best

How do you know when your child is ready to swim? I have placed my boys in swim lessons for years with little improvement. H still will not get his head wet and until recently, S said that he could swim, and probably even thought that he could swim but frankly, could not. And to top it off, all of these lessons have been expensive.

But I believe that swimming is important, even vital. I took swim lessons in the freezing cold at a local pond for years with great results. I love swimming and am confident in the water. (Though yes I do favor the breast stroke unduly and would probably struggle with the crawl at this point.) I don't think that my learning to swim had anything to do with superior teaching methods or location - I just feel that there is a 'readiness' level that must be broached by an individual child. Until a few days ago, I was convinced that neither of my sons was quite there yet.

Though S was close indeed. Even when he was floundering and discouraged I could see that he had the skills and strength in place and ready to go. And then suddenly on Wednesday afternoon it happened. He was afloat! No, he is not ready for a race or to join the local swim team yet. But he is happy, confident, and keeping himself afloat for longer than I would have thought possible to be in such a short amount of time. I love seeing him in the water and he couldn't be more thrilled with himself. I don't know hat exactly caused the breakthrough (though a pair of new goggles seemed to help). I am hoping that his brother takes heart from his example and takes that next small step towards swimming himself.
