Kids can really embarrass their mothers. Lily got me and good yesterday. I went to her Open School Night on Monday and met her teacher, the school librarian and other educational professionals. They're all wonderfully supportive and nurturing....that's why not only am I embarrassed at what happened but I also feel like a real heel. Lily's school librarian looks just like Miss Piggy. I mean she's the spitting image of her. I almost did a double take. My husband was pinching my leg under the table and whispering "Hi Yah!" in my ear.
We giggled about it all the way home and told Lily's grandparents who were babysitting her. I made sure not to tell Lily. However, her grandparents told her.....and here's where they threw me under the bus as well....they told her I told them!! I overheard them as I was coming down the hallway to the kitchen, they were all excited, "...and mommy says your school librarian looks just like Miss Piggy!"
So, Lily went to school the yesterday and told the poor woman what I said! A very curt note came home with Lily's school bag informing me of the revelation. I'm so embarrassed. What an a$$ I am. I should have never said anything to my parents. I should have known they would say something to her and considering how much she loves the Muppets how she would grab hold of the idea and run with it. The idea was probably formulating in her mind already....how could it not?! The woman is a clone of Miss Piggy!....but a very sweet, lovely person who genuinely cares about children and I hurt her feelings.
Way to go mom. We leave the city to find a more caring community for our child, we find one and then I go and blow it all to heck....and with the librarian no less! Lily loves reading and spends much of her free time in libraries. So, this woman is going to be reminded of the comment at least twice a week! The horror, the horror.
Here's the bigger issue: how do I make it up to her? Do I send a note back apologizing and throw Lily under the bus by saying, "I don't know what could have given her that idea?!" Or do I just apologize? Has this kind of thing ever happened to you? I don't want to ask my social network of other moms in the neighborhood what to do because they all speak so highly of her. If they learn of my crime they may shun me or something. Looks like I've been hit with the swine flu.
Kermeee!!!!!
