iVillage_flu pic.jpgLily, our First Grader, had her first assembly of the school year Wednesday.  Sounds harmless right??....apparently not any more.....scary music.....dum dum dummmm.  An official note from the school prinicipal came home in her backpack yesterday warning us that due to the potential dangers of the H1N1 Virus that Wednesday's all school assembly will be the first and the last one of the year due to potential cross-contamination of possibly, allegedly (imagine Law and Order sound track) infected students.  And the Halloween Parade is cancelled too.....and that's outside!!!  No more in school recitals either.  No Holiday Pageant in school the day before Winter Recess and no Pilgrims Parade either.  Do they really believe that keeping the different grades separate will help curb exposure to these viruses??  What about all the different grades riding the bus together in the morning, or the lunch room, or when they cross in the hallways??  Flu segregation sounds like an impossible notion and something out of the middle ages to me.  Doesn't this all sound a little drastic to you?  It's not just me right?!  Can I get a witness??

Now, I gotta wonder, after just a few years in the public school system...is this merely a  response to some nutball, panicking parents who have been calling the district non-stop or is it just a legal c.y.a. (cover your *ss) maneuver?

And while we're on the subject of the H1N1 and general flu topic, have you tried procuring these shots for your child?  Well, guess what?  Despite all the rhetoric and warnings, neither one is available in our district and hasn't been since June!  Sure, the general flu nasal shot is available but my child like so many is asthmatic, so they won't give it to her.  Her pediatrician insists she get the intra-muscular injection.  Well, that one has been on back order since June....and it's October.  I give up already.  Turns out the Flu Shot is the Tickle Me Elmo of the season.

I've been checking out the CDC's website on what is contained in the H1N1 vaccine and it's not quite clear which version is being shipped out currently and what the ingredients are.  I'm hearing troubling news through the internet (so it must be true right??!!....laugh please) about preservatives and oh-so-troubling levels of mercury in it....again, I'm not saying don't get the shot I'm saying I'm not sure what's in it yet.

Any rate, I don't know which is more of a pandemic the panic surrounding these viruses or the viruses themselves.  I'm not saying don't immunize your child or that these viruses are not real.  I'm just realizing a greater societal trend here myself....you know, we complain that our children don't have enough appropriate socialization these days due to the internet, texting, cell phones, Wii, PS2, etc...they play indoors rather than out of doors....they're all obese and out of shape....they're on FaceBook rather than talking to each other's Faces.....I think taking drastic steps to further reduce socialization in school will only turn our children into socially immature, fat, little techno freaks.  I don't know about you but I think the movie Wall-E is a premonition of things to come.  Who knew that movie was so scary???

Happy Halloween.

i know; it would be funny if it weren't so pitiful. they're just as paranoid here in virginia.
maybe if they do get sick we could do bloodletting or praying in tongues.

This made me laugh. I just posted on the truuconfessions site about the madness here. IThere is so much conflicting information that i don't know what I would do if the vaccine was available here (it's not).
